The cameo, a very old jewel that is becoming fashionable again
The first cameo , the first creation of which dates from ancient Greece, designates a relief engraving on a gemstone (precious stone) or ornamental stone (opaque or translucent stone) which generally surrounds a photo. This jewel comes from know-how dating back to Antiquity and will be presented as jewelry (ring, pendant, brooch) during the Renaissance period.
But where does the word “ cameo ” come from?
From the Italian “cameo”, and the Greek meaning a work done by hand, the word also comes from the French “camaïeu” which expresses the nuance of the same color.
The origin of this vintage piece
The history of cameos dates back to ancient Greek times where they were carved from stones such as onyx or sardonyx (varieties of agate). Moreover, the most famous and representative cameo in the world is the “Tazza farnese” created with sardonyx which is a derivative of the onyx stone.
It is considered the masterpiece in its own right of this engraving technique, protected at the National Museum of Naples.
Generally, the engraving is completed with a gold surround, decorated with small pearls or precious stones. These jewels were first very prized by royalty, the example of the wife of Napoleon Bonaparte or Queen Elizabeth who wore tiaras decorated with cameos.
It is therefore they who will participate in the propagation of these jewels throughout the world. The cameo is worn by both men and women, it shows a privileged social status.
Italy made the cameo reappear during the Renaissance due to its worldwide artistic influence. From then on, the jewel made its comeback in the jewelry world to inspire the greatest contemporary creators who will, over the years, modernize this masterpiece.
